EP207: Swedish Death Cleaning: Morbid or Mandatory? with Emily McDermott

Swedish Death Cleaning, or döstädning, is removing unnecessary items and preparing your home so that your loved ones aren’t burdened by them after you pass away. While the book that made it famous in 2017, The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning by Margareta Magnusson, focuses mostly on people who are in their sixties or “when the time is coming closer for you to leave the planet”, there is no reason why we can’t start today as younger moms who don’t want to burden our spouse/partners and loved ones. One question: If you were to die tomorrow, what would your loved ones have to do? Here to walk us through the practicals of this question is writer and fellow minimalist, Emily McDermott. Emily will answer questions such as: Who is death cleaning for? How long is this process? Should we tell our families? What are the lessons we can learn from this culture? And more…

EP204: The Power of Fun with Catherine Price

We’ll be chatting all about the ‘power of fun’ on today’s episode! In our always-on, productivity-addicted lifestyles, we tend to think of the pursuit of fun as being indulgent or childish. We claim not to have time for it even as we spend hours a day engaging in what journalist and screen/life balance expert Catherine Price calls “Fake Fun”—binging Netflix, scrolling through Twitter, or indulging our FOMO on Instagram, all in hopes of filling some of the emptiness we feel inside. Through years of research, Price has learned the truth: far from being frivolous or a distraction, fun—or, as she calls it, True Fun—is actually the secret to achieving our goals.

EP196: Becoming Intentional with Money Management with Erin Skye Kelly

I usually don’t share guest quotes prior to the interview but my guest today, author, Erin Skye Kelly said something that really stuck with me, “Debt Is Clutter.” Debt is clutter and it leads to a lack of freedom. It was this lesson that I had to learn before I began to pursue the purging of material things. Intentionality with my finances came first and the clutter followed. This episode won’t suddenly eradicate your debt but I hope it provides you with tools and inspiration to see that debt freedom is attainable through discipline, but first and foremost, intentionality!

On today’s episode, I speak with style coach, Kim Hancher. In this episode, she discusses how to consciously curate a capsule wardrobe and (beyond that) how to wear more of the clothes you already have in your closet right now by incorporating her tried and true style concepts. Before we get into the conversation, I’ll leave you with this quote from fashion and beauty writer, Rae Ritchie, she says, “It’s a misconception to think that minimalism and fashion are incompatible. It’s still possible to remain up to date with major trends and have a small capsule wardrobe. You just have to be judicious in your choices. Treat how you dress as a fun creative hobby, a chance to play. With a foundation of versatile basics, you can easily drop in a few items that catch your eye.” I’d have to agree.
